Wiggly Writers
Introducing the Wiggly Writers programme for pre school aged children.
I have developed this programme to be tailored to meet the needs of the individuals within a small group. This programme includes aspects of ‘The Squiggle into a Writer’ programme created by Shonette Bason as part of her ‘Spread the Happiness School’. I am currently working towards becoming a squiggle accredited teacher as part of this programme.
Developing pre-writing skills is essential for young children as these abilities form the foundation for effective writing and overall literacy development. Engaging in pre-writing activities helps children build fine motor skills, improve hand-eye coordination, and enhance spatial awareness—all crucial for controlling a pencil and forming letters. These skills also support cognitive and language development by encouraging problem-solving, memory, and creative expression. Mastering pre-writing tasks boosts confidence and prepares children for more formal writing instruction in school.
Your child will have fun while they…
-
Squiggle while they wiggle and Squiggle into a writer (developmentally appropriate programmes to encourage mark making and letter formation).
-
Explore a variety of mark making tools.
-
Develop pre-writing shapes and patterns that are essential for letter formation.
-
Strengthen their fine motor muscles so that their hands are prepared for writing as their bones and muscles develop.
-
Make marks and develop these into written language.
-
Create communications and stories using marks, drawings, letters and words.
-
Write their name and begin to form letters and numbers (as developmentally appropriate).
